Tesla Effect’s Reviews: Top 11 Makuta MOC Contest Entries

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/kSCkL-l3dz0/maxresdefault.jpg

So as you may well know, or have been living under a rock (no offence to Pohatu), there is an ongoing MOC contest called “Show us your Makuta” in which contestants built their own versions of the Misguided jealous overlord in the attempt to win all the sets from Bionicle Generations 2. Due to the Evil Emperor of Evilness being 2 good 4 an actual set (RIP in pizza Bionicle), we are here to see the Top 11 Best Makuta MOC Entries for the contest. Why Top 11? Well its certainly not because I want to go one set beyond, its obviously because its my favourite number.

DISCLAIMER: I dont own these creations nor do I take credit for them. Im just a simple man who appreciates nice building creativity and want to share it to the community. If it helps the MOCs get more notice by LEGO community senpai, the better. Also just because I put some MOCs on this list doesnt mean others are bad (though Ive seen a lot of trash entries on the site), its just this topic will go on and on and as of time of this topics creation there are about 500 entries, so if some new ones show up that are great, cant help that. You can comment bellow on what you think are the best, what you disagree upon. To be honest all of the entries I mentioned to me have a shot to win, its just some personally feel better from a visual stand point.

SO LETS A GO!

Number 11:
Makuta Emperor of Shadows by lbpfan21

Starting with a bag is the lovely trans purple, proportioned behemoth.
I really like how the armour flows with the figure. The use of trans purple skull torso shells nicely fill in the torso area while also adding to the colour scheme which by itself fairly consistent and well proportioned around the figure. The arm area feels a bit off from the rest, the round shell add-ons makes it look like he has more beefier lower parts of the arms as oppose to the more streamlined upper part. While the front of torso flows naturally and makes visual cohesion, the back feels like off. I get why the spikes were added for more affect, but because of that the shoulders/back area (which are suppose to be the largest part of the set as it is with humanoid proportions) look a lot smaller than it should (specially with the use of the smaller chest add on which just adds to the confused effect).

The legs are mostly okey, but the frontal pistons is a very odd choice, hard to believe that those would actually serve a functional useful use.
The weapon is okey, though a bit bland due to the large disk having no printing/sticker on it.
But the bigest gripe with me is the head. Yes the use of the MoCr is a given (later entries have it as well), but the head and the mask with it look so disproportioned with the rest of the body, plus its very bare in that top are (some horns would have helped a bit).
Great entry, but small flawed touches make it less great and the head area is so small and uninteresting compared with the rest of the body.

Number 10:
G2 Makuta by chubbybots

I like spikes I can not lie, but the messy use of it grinds me gears. The only reason why this entry is above the previous one is because of the sheer amount of options you get with it in terms of display, functions, and other options. The armour flow works well, most of the time (he is very spikey dude, I get that). For a small dude is fairly filled in (besides the upper leg area that is).
From what I got he is suppose to have his own Shadow Creature which he mounts on his back and uses as additional blades similar to what Renekton from LoL would have. The scorpion/spider thing is a nice addition to the figure and could work well on its own if need be.

Makutas hammer is rather simple, but effective for such a small figure. I like the added skull spider on it which flows fairly nicely with the hammer construction.
The feet are really nice, with the toes and all which are surprisingly not spiky as it usually goes with evil figures.
Great figure, great creature, but when together and spikes going around Makuta, it looks just too much to handle.

Number 9:
Makuta of Hell by jakobekvall687

A very creative attempt at making a Makuta. Probably the most unique out of the bunch as it portrays him as an actual Biblical Devil. The demonic legs, the bat like wings, the Lord business crotch cloth, all look fairly well and consistent with the figure. The weapon is kinda dinky, but I feel that wasnt one of the main aspects of the sets design. The attempt at making a devil figure is a success but is not something I would closely associate with what Makuta visually was.

The face is beautifully sculpted, very Pit Lordy inspired, but it doesnt grab me as Makuta, at least not this generations version (G3 hype if it ever was one).
Amazing unique design, just wish I thought more of Bionicle rather than WoW when looking at his face…

Speaking of Pit Lords…

Number 8:
Makuta by Alieraah

Now this MOCist Im quite familiar with and am have quite enjoyed her creative designs this one being no exception. One of the only centaur like Makutas on this list (and probably in the contest) , he is certainly very intimidating in his appearance. As mentioned in the previous entry, he very much reminds me of a Pit Lord from Warcraft, this one largely so due to the body and choice of weapons. But appart from the previous one, this one feels more like Makuta due to its rather nice choice of colours, distribution of colours and choice of pieces for the head. This Makuta feels like a beast that was corrupted so badly that anything that made him before is lost in this Fell corrupted demonic body. The weapon is crafted nicely (using the two Brutaka blades to form one is brilliant), and it feels like a longsword you dont want to be at the receiving end off.

I and a bit surprised by the chunkiness of the legs while the torso is fairly skinny. Also while it visually looks descent, the tail area using the Inika launcher extenders is just odd, specially knowing that it will always be in that permanent bend. Would have done wonders if the tail and legs visually and mechanically were more possible as I feel it would have added a lot more nicer pictures for the entries favour.
A great entry Ali. Not the best out there but it certainly is a very creative and opposing figure.

Number 7:
Makuta, Master of Shadows by awstoon

https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/921b082ece6c4767ae3581f482b56da0/Large.jpg
Another purple Makuta, yay. I really like the horn design, it blends nicely with the mask itself while also adding in the purple colour which surprisingly doesnt clash that much with the rest of the trans purple. The designer says that he takes inspirations from the Purple Makuta MOC from the Contest videos and I can definitely see in in the use of that Ekimurella wheel, the armour add-ons, the army and the legs, the “I gut your masks Toe”. While odd, I do find it kind funny to see the Skull spider in his crotch area.
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/4b167043dcc0429f8da9cbb6756a451e/Large.jpg
The wings while somewhat skinny, are again nicely filled in with the large technic panel pieces.
I can see this being an actual Makuta figure if there ever was one due to how it nicely flows and works with the 2016/2017 theme they were going for. Still its not higher on the list, just due to the fact that a lot of designs elements were from other sources.

Number 6:
Makuta: Corrupted Unification by Ventum-Mittens
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/168ec3adfbe34997ba80d8b8b531c929/Large.jpg
Another very unique design choice for a Makuta build while still retaining what Makuta would actually feel like. The story behind this MOC (literally) is that after the cataclysm Makuta lost a large chunks of his body cause of the explosion which sent him into the Shadow Realms. The MoUP wanted to be the boss so it created a body for itself while Makuta was still wearing it. Now Makuta and Mask live in a symbiotic relationship (Like old Lord Voldermord did with the Bald teacher dude)
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/c353e5de2d6d45c4ae4c4080c6de8d0a/Large.jpg
I like the fact that it uses untraditional white pieces and purple for the body, not common to see with villains. The head is sculpted beautifully, it almost feels lime its all just one piece and that the forehead is a print (thats how nicely everything flows up there).
The weapon is fairly simple for a simple build as he is, which in the end works nicely. And I love, LOVE the head/skull necklace he has, very brutal very unique.
And the Makuta at the beck meshes nicely and has already visually tells the the previously mentioned story.
Great entry, but pray for Makuta everytime MoUP wants to sleep or lay down, or even if it falls on its back.

Number 5:
Makuta, Ascended Overlord by Mystic2760
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/f1b3673293c14761ac9d49c695432911/Large.jpg
Seemingly in permanent horizontal position due to creative artsy reasons, dont let the camera tricks fool you. This Makuta means business. Taking a more Teridax approach, it uses the G1 Mask of Shadows for this figure and aslo maks it look good with some small CCBS additions. Th torso area flows nicely and the butt cape works well enough for the Boss Makuta look. The weapons is rather simple as oppose to the rest of the gribbly body and they feel like large tongs (probably uses them to destroy all unibrows in his newly conquered Empired).
While it uses a bunch of CCBS pieces, the bulk of the figure is primarily made out of old styled technic and G1 Bionicle parts which is just feels a lot more noticeable to me than in previous entries (dunno, probably cause its a lighter colour scheme).
Really like this Makuta build, would like it on my shelf as well.

Number 4…ish:
Makuta, Sorcerer of Dread / Makuta The Mask Breaker by Djokson
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/c7bf2071f0544f858bec7318222573a5/Large.jpg
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/5f9176b27442484489e9e8822367bd83/Large.jpg
Two very unique entries on this list but since they are from one amazing dude, Ill put them together and let the most favourable win. Two very different approaches to how Makuta should look like. One is like a Warlock, summoning Fel corrupted sceliman from beyond the graves, while the other one is a brute that would make even Destroyer cry for mercy. Both have very nicely flowing bodies (almost too nice flowing). While it does give a visual feel like his body is rippling with muscles, due to it being plastic it comes of as if he is made out of those Birthday balloons that you make a flower or doge out of, Specially with the Hammer one (Would like this balloon figure though). The head sculpting is very detailed and very distinct between one and the other figure. The Breakers one looks like it could be a more mutated version of the MoCr. Both of their weapons are nicely built and compliment the figures appearances very well. I specially like the use of the Kratta canister piece for the hammer. Both of the figures small amount of unconventional colours (mainly bright purple and pink for the torso area and even eyes). Any small additional do not feel out of place or clashing, there is just a right amount of them to make the visual approach work.
Overall both are great entries and very creative distinct designs. But its hard to pick one over the other as they compliment each other very well and would work better as a small team of Makuta, rather than just one guy.

Number 3:
Teridax The Cursed Emperor by thedragonitus
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/e0380916435542ec97dc01e913a70892/Large.jpg
I have a very soft spot for this entry so much so that I was conflicted if I should put this one a bit higher on the list. Its got all the elements I love in MOCs: the use of system, technic and CCBS, the Samurai approach, and weapon holsters.
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/47ef61462a4b4edbb2971be97956ba22/Large.jpg
While previous and the next entry were large MOCs to intimidate you with their grand large stature, this one intimidates you by the sheer presents. the brilliant use of Knights Kingdoms system bricks for the toros compliment the regal Makuta Mask very well, making look nicely from any angle. The Butt cape also works nicely to hide any unseen empty spaces behind the figure. It has just the right amount of gold, black and purple/trans purple to not look to monochome. It has a fairly unique (to me among the other entries) take on the horn design that just work with the Samurai approach . Also using tire treads for samurai shogun armour, magnificent. While the large staff weapon is fairly simple, it feels more like a shamanistic tool rather than a tool of war (something you would see figures like Madara, and Naruto use in the later parts of that perticular animes story). But if that brakes, he still has three bad bum Katanas to fight anyone foolish enough to oppose him.
He isnt that armoured up or incredibly detailed, but the character and style of this entry are on point and I very much like it specially cause its a small figure that achieved large things.

Number 2:
Devourer Of The Light by TolerantAxe97

https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/ac3f3a8d970243ddbcd579aee5e80e6c/Large.jpg
Holy Bison, this MOC is huge (Umarak for scale). Its just scary looking. the amazing use of all them blade pieces is just, I have no words to describe how nicely they flow with this figure. They just work their magic and this thing popped up amazingly. The cape also adds a lot to the figure, primarily in the colour department. Mask of Control? Get that tiny piece of poop out of here, im gonna wear it as a necklace for how large I am. The head sculpting is amazing, though I wish he didnt have that permanent open jaw.
Apart from that there isnt much to hat over this MOC, it has a lot of reasons to win and I acknowledge them 100%.

But before I mention Number 1 here are some Honourable Mentions

Wish you could hold a small star in the palms of your hand, well this Makuta got that covered. With his fair use of both technic, CCBS and old styled Bionicle pieces, this MOC achieves not only an intimidating appearance, but also some play function that has story/character significants
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/380d4d0ef0b249589094deb43cb61272/Large.jpg
By opening his chest, you are able to make a shadow had attack that is heavily inspired by Makutas signature move in the second Bionicle movie. It also looks nice and can be stored inside the chest without any large issues.
https://d29obovduoh05n.cloudfront.net/api/v1/image/0031e7bffcd6424980b9ccc6989829c8/Large.jpg
And yes, the mask is a custom approach to the G1 Mask of Shadows, which I approve. I love it always when someone takes a more creative approach to designing the figures mask/head and this one does it really well.
His chest surprisingly works well and the body flows gribbly nicely but that one blue pin in the crotch area makes me pj rage salty)
The staff is relatively simple but the somewhat biggest gipe are the wings. Adding some cloth element would fill them off nicely and would make the figure perfect. As it is that is the main issue with the figure. But I can still see them as cosmic wings, representing the night sky with Makutas presence as the God of Gods holding a new born star in his hand. I would definitely imagine him as being an ever looming presence in the universe, sorta like the Old Gods of Lovecraft Mythos (minus the ugly tentacles).

All of these are awesome! Except for Number 9. Not my cup of tea.

These are all great entries! Tesla, if one or more on this list become winners, you can say that you have a similar taste to official bionicle designers! :stuck_out_tongue:

Well to me these are all potential winners. I mean I would like if one of those mentioned would win one of the prises but ether way their creators should be proud of making such awesome Makuta MOCs (Im physically incapable of making a MOC such as those due to a small amount of pices I can go with). I would like to have all of these MOCs in various degrees cause how good they are.
